Hello

Picture of the proprietor

Hey Now, I'm Jonathan, a 60-year-old former teacher and former sales manager in the Pacific North West natural foods' industry. Raised in Southern California, schooled in Northern California, 12 years of Grateful Dead shows, and formerly educated at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington (1987 to 1991). I've been a student (and teacher) of History and Economics since before high school, and my family's been involved in liberal politics since the early '70's. A Burner, DJ, and world traveler, I've lived abroad for over a decade. Back in the States, I turned 60, and decided to stop working for corporations that don't give a crap about me, and set out to refine my life by my own design. I decided to start my own business on a wing and a prayer, with a heavy dose of heart and humor. My intention? To make a humble living anywhere in the world, wherever there's a solid WI-FI signal. I'm single, have no children and am responsible for no one but myself, so why not? I had been desperately looking for work when the election happened, and decided to jump into my plan, knowing I needed an exit strategy. I waited to see what was going to happen, and worked towards my goal. But the depressing news of February and March '25 was having a cumulative effect on me, so I stopped what I was doing; and out of self-preservation, and conscientious artistic political necessity, I started building Insurgent Apparel.

The Story

The original name of this store was Street fight Provisions, but I decided it was too violent. I'm really not the violent or militant type at all, I just have little patience for overt corruption and intolerance, and the fascist politics that have developed in the US over the last decade are unacceptable to me. As a student of Revolutionary Theory, I know there comes a point where radical measures have to be taken to preserve the Republic. So like Marx, Groucho, not Karl, I applied humor, rather than violence, to take on the problem; knowing what Goebbels II is likely doing, it seemed an apt time to ratchet up the agit-prop! There are some comic book violent designs, but art needs to be daring... Drawing from classic themes of revolution and anti-fascism messaging from the 1930s, with a bit of radical anarchism and radical feminism, sprinkled with some classic pre-code cartoon comix, some vintage sci-fi imagery, and a little word play, I wove together a fiery collection of what I think is fun, subtle and radical. I really hope that you love these shirts, scarves, and hoodies enough to wear them proudly - spreading the message of resistance with humor and a slightly retro-futuristic edge. May they strengthen your resolve as you face the days coming...
